It’s a New Year that time when people make resolutions and goals, the time for new beginnings. You feel compelled to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. Except, when you can’t.

Perhaps you are struggling with the loss of a loved one, an ongoing health crisis or the stress of running hard and getting nowhere and it has bled into 2017. You feel the pressure to achieve and create but your energy has faded and your heart isn’t in it.

One of the hardest things in our culture is to accept that Being is Doing. Sitting with yourself in quiet acceptance over your struggle is one of the most powerful acts you can do.

Notice I did not say pushing yourself past it which is the same as ignoring what is going on. I did not say beating yourself up for how you feel or for what you are not doing; that is not acceptance.

If you were a caterpillar, you couldn’t see outside of your cocoon. How could you know what seems like dying is a doorway to a new beginning? Until you emerged from the cocoon and flew away, any story you told yourself would be untrue.

Emotional stress and pain can be like that cocoon. When you are inside it you can’t imagine how you will break free until the moment you do.

Sit, breathe deeply and trust that, like the butterfly, you are waiting to fly.
